Somewhere in my notes you’ll find written descriptions based on people I saw on the subway. I used to make them in college and recently I’ve felt compelled to look back at them.

“Woman in blouse with red roses. Short brown hair, dangling bejeweled earrings. Applying hand lotion from her purse while talking to someone I want to assume she works with. Strong eye contact.”

Probably not the most interesting piece of information, but something about her—and hundreds of others—in February 2018 caught my attention. While I was writing the descriptions I remember thinking they might come in handy later. Even if they haven’t in the ways I may have thought they would, I was in my pattern of taking notice of what was around me. The act of recording it was reason enough.
